My wife recently showed me a picture on Instagram of her friend traveling the world with her husband. She quietly said to me, “Wow! I really wish we were doing the same.”
I looked at her and said nothing. Then, after about 10 seconds of silence, I said, “Sure, darling, we’ll plan a vacation soon. Where do you want to go?”
That 10-second pause was me processing her intention to show me her friend’s photos. It meant she felt left behind because she wasn’t traveling the world like her friend.
Even though my wife and I are very happy with where we are, seeing those photos online made her feel like something was missing.
I knew her intentions, but I didn’t react. Instead, I processed it and told her what she wanted to hear. In reality, I wanted to tell her not to compare her life to others. My response could have upset my wife, but I did what I had to do to avoid unnecessary drama.
Why you feel left behind in life
You might have been in a similar scenario that made you feel like you are falling behind in life. Things you see on social media—people living perfect lives—can make you feel like something is missing from your life.
You might see your friend getting a promotion or a close relative getting married. These things quietly tell you that your life isn’t as perfect as theirs.
It’s a frustrating feeling. You start questioning your decisions, comparing your progress to everyone else’s, and wondering whether you’ve wasted too much time.
The truth is, feeling behind doesn’t mean you are behind. Sometimes, you are measuring your life against someone else’s timeline. Other times, you’re so focused on where you want to be that you fail to appreciate how far you’ve come.
You don’t need to figure out your entire life. Nobody knows exactly how their life will turn out. Even if things look perfect from the outside, you don’t know the struggles, pain, and problems they face.
Remember that you don’t need to be in the same life phase as someone else.
However, if you are going through a phase like this, here are seven things you can do to regain perspective, find your footing, and start moving forward.
1. Stop comparing your life to others.
This is the number one reason you feel like you are falling behind in life.
When you see someone else—a close friend, colleague, or relative—make progress or succeed, you wonder why you aren’t there yet.
You start thinking about your problems and what you wish you had so your life would be as perfect as theirs.
But the truth is that everyone has a different starting point, timeline, and set of circumstances. We’re all different. We have different goals, ambitions, and abilities. So, there’s no point in comparing.
Focus on your own progress instead of someone else’s milestones. As I said, you don’t know their challenges and struggles because you are only seeing a small part of their lives.
2. Accept where you are right now.
Instead of comparing and feeling envious, start acknowledging your current situation without judging yourself.
Look around you and see how far you have come. Appreciate what you have and be happy with it instead of focusing on what you don’t have.
When you learn to accept, you are one step ahead in change. You can understand what’s working and what isn’t. From there, you can begin your own journey to success. And it doesn’t have to be like someone else’s.
3. Identify what’s actually bothering you.
Understanding where you feel behind is crucial because it lets you focus on improving. That doesn’t mean something is wrong with you or you have to achieve something significant.
The goal is to separate what you genuinely want from what society expects.
Identify the area where you feel behind — career, money, relationships, health, or something else.
Then, work on it if that will make your life better — not because you need to please someone else.
4. Focus on one area at a time.
Usually, when we feel behind, we think that nothing is working for us. We want to reset everything and start over.
That’s usually because you deny believing that things can be fixed. You think your entire life is a mess, but usually only one or two things are causing the problem.
You don’t have to fix your whole life at once.
Choose one area that matters most right now and focus your attention there. Make sure that solving this problem would make your life significantly better.
5. Take one small step today.
Change begins once you set the intention. And you can do that right now. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Not next month. Now.
Apply for a job, go for a walk, save a little money, or reach out to someone you miss. Do whatever you have to do to make your situation better. It doesn’t matter if the action is small.
Do it.
Small actions can help you regain control and momentum.
6. Stop waiting for the perfect time.
You don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin.
Often, we fail to take action because we wait for the right moment. You think that you don’t have what it takes to make the move.
The truth is, you can only improve if you start. Unless you take action, you won’t know what works and what doesn’t.
Start with what you have, where you are, and what you can do today. Figure out along the way. You don’t have to know everything from the beginning. Just take the first step.
7. Give yourself credit for how far you’ve come.
When you feel left behind, we often forget to acknowledge our progress and achievements.
One of the best life lessons I’ve learned is that to get what you want, you must be grateful for what you have.
If you aren’t thankful for what you have—no matter how small it is —you won’t be able to achieve greater things in life.
Gratitude manifests more things to be grateful for.
Reflect on the challenges you’ve overcome and the lessons you’ve learned.
Remember that progress isn’t always visible, and your life isn’t a race.
Closing Thought
You might not be where you hoped you would be by now, and that’s okay. You don’t need to catch up with everyone else.
You just need to take the next step toward the life you want to build.
Stay focused on your path. Set goals that improve your life.
Accept where you are right now. Then decide what matters most to improve your circumstances. Make little, consistent progress.
At some point, we all feel left behind. Instead of rushing to catch up with everyone else, accept where you are and focus on your journey; that’s what will make the real difference toward a better life.
