That’s what I kept telling myself whenever I wrote an article. I thought I needed more research, more editing, and a perfect conclusion. My biggest fear was that people wouldn’t like my article. “What if they think it’s useless?” “Why would anyone care about what I have to say?”

Many creators face similar problems. They overthink their creative potential and end up not publishing anything at all. I’ve seen writers, photographers, and even musicians not publish their work just because they thought it wasn’t good enough. However, when I saw their work, I found it excellent. It was in their own minds that kept telling them that they needed to do more.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my writing journey, it’s that you’ll never feel ready. But the truth is: readiness is not a requirement. It’s an illusion.

You can’t compare your rough draft to someone else’s 10-year career. Don’t expect your work to be perfect. If people judge your work, let them. Quit being afraid of judgment, being average, or being seen. There is no growth without imperfection. Every professional started as an amateur.

Publishing early accelerates growth.

Publishing imperfect work means you allow yourself to grow. When people give feedback on your work (positive or negative), you can improve on it. But if you don’t publish, you miss out on the feedback. You can’t improve in isolation. The market is the best teacher. Remember, real responses are more valuable than imagined criticism.

Another benefit of publishing imperfect work is that it creates volume. You build a massive amount of work, which builds your skills. A hundred imperfect posts are far greater than one perfect post.

Clarity comes from action. You don’t “find your voice” by thinking; you find it by shipping. The only way to know what you want, what the audience wants, and what you are actually interested in is to show up and publish. Let the work be imperfect. Let people judge and criticize your work. Yes, it will be tough, but it is the perfect way to improve and grow.

Why publish before you are ready

Readiness is an illusion. You feel like you aren’t ready because you fear judgment, you have an identity attachment problem, and there is an illusion of control. Publishing doesn’t mean you lose your identity or surrender control. It means you are ready to accept change for the better.

Publishing when you aren’t ready builds courage. Your identity becomes one that isn’t afraid to show up, even when you have insecurities. That’s how growth happens.

Publishing creates momentum.

It helps you develop discipline.

It attracts opportunities.

It builds an audience faster.

It reduces fear over time.

I didn’t think I had it in me. Writing was never something I thought I could do. But once I moved past my own insecurities, things changed. I showed up consistently, and before I knew it, I had written over 100 articles. My writing habits improved, and so did my skills. Opportunities I never knew I had came to me without trying hard.

Soon, I built an audience of over 1000 readers. It came faster than I had imagined.

How to publish before you’re ready

Remove the fear of judgment, being average, and being seen. That’s a good way to start. Then, you follow these simple steps to see real change over time.

Set a deadline (not a quality threshold): Deadlines force decisions. Decide in advance: “This goes live on Friday.”

Use the 80% rule: When it’s 80% good, publish it. Let feedback improve the rest.

Short the creation cycle: Draft → Edit once → Publish. Avoid endless revision loops. It creates more doubts because you might identify more imperfections in your work.

Separate creation from evaluation: Create boldly and edit logically. Don’t mix the two.

Measure output, not applause: Track how often you publish. Ignore vanity metrics (views, likes, followers, etc.) in the early stages.

What worked best for me was creating a weekly publishing schedule. No matter what happened, I had to publish three articles every week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. That was it. I didn’t care if they were getting views. I published them and posted them on my social media. Then, I’d move on to the next.

Soon, I had a library of work that helped me get traction. People started noticing me because I was consistent. My CTA helped me build an email list of over 500 people. That was a game-changer for me. From then on, I knew how things worked and applied the same formula to create more content and grow my audience.

Conclusion

You don’t publish when you’re ready. You publish to become ready. Confidence is the result, not the prerequisite.

What are you sitting on? What draft is collecting dust? What idea are you overthinking? Do what you can. Use what you have. Try this: Publish something this week. Hit “post” before it feels fully comfortable. And embrace visible growth.

Your future audience is waiting for your imperfect beginning. Start messy; grow publicly.

We learn writing from an early age in school — grammar, structure, complex words, cleverness, and more. What if I told you that most of the stuff your teacher taught you in High School about writing was a lie?

You see, your English teacher wasn’t a bad person. They were just teaching you a version of writing that works really well academically and really poorly for real life. They teach you what’s best for the exams. However, the reality is different.

I know this because I believed what my teacher taught me for years. I tried to write perfect grammar, worshiped structure, and thought that if my sentences were clean, polished, and perfect enough, people would automatically read my work.

They didn’t. And it took me a long time to realize why.

The Big Lie: “Great Writing Is About Rules”

When I was in High School, writing felt like math, with all the rules, formulas, introductions that must look a certain way, and conclusions that must sound perfect. My teacher would disallow starting a sentence with “And,” “Because,” or “But.”

So, I wrote safely.

I made sure that every sentence I wrote was technically correct. I neatly dressed every paragraph.

Unfortunately, my writing was completely forgettable. Sure, it got me good grades, but at what cost?

Perfect grammar didn’t make my writing good. It just made it quiet.

Real Writing Is About Attention, Not Approval

Your teacher wasn’t deliberately trying to make your writing bad. They were doing their job. Their goal was to get you to write according to the rules.

But they didn’t tell you what writing was really about. Either they didn’t know it, or they didn’t want you to know it.

Here’s what they probably never told you:

If no one wants to read your writing, none of the rules matter.

Great writing starts by earning attention, but by proving you followed MLA format.

When I read great writers, I saw them constantly breaking the “rules.”

They use fragments.

They repeat themselves on purpose.

They end paragraphs too early.

Etc.

It’s not that they didn’t know grammar, but they know people.

So, I started breaking the rules and experimenting with my own writing style. And guess what? It worked. The rules didn’t help me. Understanding people did.

What Actually Makes Writing Great

I stopped trying to impress imaginary teachers by breaking the writing rules. But that didn’t mean I wasn’t careful about grammar or my writing structures. It’s just that I didn’t have to polish my writing anymore.

I made my own rules (sort of) — ones that built a real connection with the readers. Here’s what I learned:

1/ Clarity beats cleverness

Great writing isn’t about showing off how smart you are. It’s about how well people can understand your message.

I tried using “intellectual” words in my early articles, but to be completely honest, I didn’t understand what they actually meant. It felt as if I was trying to put on a mask and lying to my readers.

The moment I started writing the way I talk, people stayed longer.

Clear writing feels effortless to read. It’s a skill you build once you let go of showing off how smart you are.

2/ Emotion > Structure

High school essay loves structure. But readers love feelings.

People don’t remember the words you use or what you wrote as your headline. They remember how your writing made them feel — seen, challenged, relieved, or understood.

If your writing has no emotional connection with the reader, it won’t matter how perfect your headline (or structure) is.

Emotion is crucial for great writing.

3/ Specificity is everything

Teachers reward general ideas. They give you good grades for it. However, readers hate them. They want the details — how, when, what, and where.

“Hard work brings success” is grammatically acceptable. But it is entirely useless. It’s generic and doesn’t provide much value to the reader.

Tell me about failing in your business, doubting yourself, and showing up anyway. Tell me how you overcame the challenges and got back up on your feet. Now I’m listening.

Great writing lives in details, not summaries.

4/ Voice is more important than correctness

Your teacher probably never prioritized your voice. They didn’t tell you to be unique or share your personal experiences. Even if they did, they wanted you to stay within the rules of writing.

Readers don’t care about the rules. They care about your voice (subconsciously).

Voice is the difference between “this is well written” and “this feels like a real person.” It’s why two writers can say the same thing, and one feels alive while the other feels like homework.

Grammar Isn’t Useless. It’s Just Not the Point.

As I said, grammar matters. You can’t ignore all the rules because when someone reads your story, they need to understand it properly. They can easily overlook your writing because you didn’t write correctly.

However, grammar is like salt. It’s necessary, but no one eats it by itself.

Clean writing helps readers trust you, but it doesn’t make them care. That part comes from honesty, clarity, and the courage to sound human instead of “correct.”

The Real Lesson I Wish I’d Learned Earlier

Great writing isn’t about avoiding mistakes. It’s about communicating something real, in a way someone else actually wants to hear.

Once I stopped writing to be graded and started writing to be heard (and understood), everything changed. My engagement grew, I received more feedback, and my confidence grew.

So no, your English teacher didn’t tell you the whole truth. But now, you know it. And that’s when good writing actually starts.

Find your niche

Write for one person

Write daily

etc.

This advice should be retired because there is no single perfect writing strategy that will make you a better writer.

When I began writing online, I sucked (like most of us do). Nobody read my articles, and the pain of not getting the outcome for the tremendous amount of work I did was extremely tough.

Later, I realized I was making a significant mistake that led to those results. The problem wasn’t in my writing; it was in my habit of trying to write perfectly.

I would find the best idea and write the perfect headlines. I made sure that each sentence was well-written. I would spend hours researching just to finish my 1500-word essay.

The problem wasn’t in the effort, but in my “desire” to achieve a perfect outcome because I was making the effort.

The outcome: disappointments all over the place. For the 2 hours I spent writing and perfecting an article, I wouldn’t even get 20 views. And it was almost the same for all my articles. Only a few would receive 50–100 views.

The best decision I made was letting go of perfection.

I loved writing, but because of my inner need to get the perfect outcome for everything I wrote, I struggled.

So, I made a shift that was a game-changer. I stopped expecting and started acting. It means I didn’t think much about ideas, niches, or audience categories. Instead, I wrote about everything and anything that came to my mind.

Also, the most significant shift was letting go of my desire to get perfect outcomes.

Instead of focusing on something I couldn’t control (views, likes, followers, etc.), I began doing what I could control (writing more, engaging with the audience, and learning).

Write, no matter what.

The goal now wasn’t to get 10,000 views. Instead, it was to finish my 8:00 a.m. article. The only thing I knew that mattered was showing up and giving my best.

The rest wasn’t in my control. There was no point in thinking about how many views my article got and how much money it made. The more I gave value to these metrics, the more I suffered. It also impacted my future writings.

My goal was to write and to take one step at a time.

Hit publish and focus on writing the next piece — that’s what I did. Then, things started to change. Momentum grew.

I was able to create a large volume of work. I wrote daily, so my articles reached out to more people. I saw the metrics grow by not focusing on them.

That’s when it hit me that writing (or any creative work) isn’t about the outcome; it’s about the effort. The more you focus on doing the work, the less anxious you will be about the results. And when you keep going and repeat the process over and over, you improve. The results will show up without trying hard.

Do this to get better at writing.

Focus on writing. That’s it.

Pick a time that’s suitable for you to write. Make sure it’s uninterrupted. Make sure you’re caffeinated and ready to go.

Then, just write — no editing or overthinking the outcomes. Do your best and write. If you need to correct a sentence or a typo, do it later. For now, just focus on getting the thoughts out. Keep writing until you are happy with it.

Then, edit as if your life depends on it. You can do it after a few hours or the next day. That way, you get a fresh eye to look at your writing.

If you do that every day for at least 21 days, your writing will improve 10x, and you will see massive results.

Let me be honest: I didn’t start writing to make money. I just wanted to share my thoughts and maybe build a small audience.

But writing became one of the most profitable things I’ve ever done over time.

Treating writing as a craft and a business can absolutely change your financial life.

Here are 10 writing habits that helped me turn words into income. And they can help you too.

1. Write Every Day (Even If You Don’t Publish)

The richest writers don’t write only when they feel like it. They write daily, even if it’s just 100 words.

Daily writing keeps your creative engine running. The more you write, the more ideas you generate, which turn into products, posts, and income.

I wrote every morning for 30 days straight once, and that streak alone produced three of my best-performing articles and the online content for a digital product that still sells today.

2. Repurpose Ruthlessly

Don’t reinvent the wheel every time. One article can become:

A newsletter

A LinkedIn post

A tweet thread

A YouTube script

A digital product idea

I once turned a blog post into an e-book that helped me generate over $2000.

3. Write About What You Know (In Public)

You don’t need to be a guru. Just write from experience. Share what you’ve learned, what you’re learning, or what you’re struggling with.

Share your failures and behind-the-scenes too.

People pay for clarity; if you’re one step ahead of someone else, you have something valuable to offer.

4. Build an Email List Early

Social media is great, but you don’t own it. Algorithms change, platforms fade.

An email list is your direct line to readers who care. It helps you build a loyal audience who will genuinely support you. They’ll buy from you and share your work.

Building an email list should be your most significant priority as a writer (or creator). Start from day one.

5. Create Digital Products

Once you’ve written about something enough, turn it into a product — e-books, templates, swipe files, or courses.

Remember, if you build once, you can sell forever.

My first $5 e-book felt like magic. I made money while sleeping because of something I’d already written.

6. Say Something That Matters

The internet is full of fluff. Be the person who actually has a point.

People pay attention (and pay more) when you take a stance. Don’t be afraid to have an opinion.

Relatability attracts more people. Try to create content that’s relatable to a large number of people.

7. Write for One Person

The best writing feels like it’s written just for you. Don’t write for the internet. Write for one person with a specific problem.

When I imagine a single reader — what they’re struggling with and what they need to hear — my writing becomes 10x more engaging (and persuasive).

8. Keep a Swipe File of Ideas That Spark

Every time you read something that excites you, makes you click, or makes you think, save it.

I keep a swipe file of headlines, hooks, intros, product ideas, and amazing articles.

When I’m stuck, I open it and almost always find a money-making idea staring back at me.

9. Make Your Writing Easy to Read

Big words and complex sentences don’t impress anyone. Clarity wins.

You can convey a genuine message using short paragraphs, plain language, and real talk.

10. Ask for the Sale

You don’t need to be pushy. But if you’ve written something valuable, don’t be afraid to share it with the world.

Self-promotion is a necessity to succeed as a content creator.

When I finally started adding simple calls to action after each of my articles, I began attracting more readers, subscribers, and buyers.

Conclusion

Writing won’t make you rich overnight. But if you build these habits and treat them like a business, the results will compound.

The truth is that the internet runs on words. You’ll never go broke again if you can write clearly, consistently, and purposefully.

Start small. Write daily. Build your stack and watch what happens.

Content creation can feel like a never-ending job, whether you are a writer, filmmaker, musician, or internet personality. You need fresh content almost every day.

That’s tough.

As a writer, I had difficulty coming up with innovative ideas, which kept me from creating consistently. It also took me hours to ideate, outline, write, and edit a particular post.

Additionally, I had to post on social media platforms, send weekly newsletters, create designs, and sometimes film videos. It felt like a never-ending task every week.

It felt impossible to stay consistent and creative without burning out.

But that doesn’t happen anymore—thanks to AI. I can create quality content 10 times faster.

Here’s how I do it (and how you can too).

1/ Build a Content Pillar

I first pick a core piece of content — usually a blog post or a long-form article. I call this my content pillar because it helps me create other forms of content later.

A long-form article is usually valuable, in-depth, and helpful. For example, I recently wrote a post titled “The 5-Step Morning Routine Backed by Psychology That Boosted My Success.” I used AI (ChatGPT) to help brainstorm headlines, structure the outline, and speed up the draft.

However, I still wrote the core message myself because it was about my morning routine. I had to research some psychological facts for the article, which was easy because of AI. Further, AI helped me skip the “black page paralysis”—something that happened a lot to me in the past.

If you can provide a strong prompt to ChatGPT or other AI chatbots, it makes brainstorming and ideating 10x faster. This is the prompt I used for my article:

“Outline a blog post on the best morning routine backed by psychology, and include the following five major activities to it.”

2/ Repurpose the Pillar Content

Once my long-form blog is ready, I turn it into smaller content pieces using AI:

1 LinkedIn post: I extract the key insight and turn it into a short, engaging narrative or thought piece.

1 X thread or 4–5 posts: I break the article into a thread or 4–5 puncy, standalone tweets (I still call them that, even though Twitter has become X now).

1 Instagram carousel: I use subpoints as slides, and AI helps me write captions for the post.

1 newsletter: I summarize the post with a friendly intro, a lesson, and a link to read more for my weekly newsletter.

1–2 designs: I sometimes turn my article into an infographic or animated video content. For that, I use Canva. However, AI helps me decide what design elements to use.

That’s five solid pieces from one blog. AI tools like ChatGPT, Notion AI, and Canva’s Magic Write can help speed this up.

Prompt I use:

“Turn this article into a X thread with a strong hook and 6 points.”

Or

“Write a newsletter email for my subscribers about this blog. Also, add a link so that they can read the entire article.”

3/ Batch Create Visuals and Captions

As I said, I use Canva to create designs for Instagram, LinkedIn, and other platforms. I usually pick pre-made templates on Canva and tweak them to my liking.

Since I already have the copy (thanks to AI), designing becomes drag-and-drop easy. I also ask ChatGPT to write captions that match the tone for each platform:

Professional for LinkedIn

Friendly and relatable for Instagram

Punchy and direct for X

I batch create all the visuals and save them in a folder by platform.

Prompt I use:

Write an Instagram caption in a warm, friendly tone for my article about psycologicallly backed morning routines. Here’s the link to my article: [my article link].”

4/ Scheduling

I use AI to make my work easier and faster. I do not have to manually generate ideas and write drafts for my content.

What’s even better is scheduling the posts once they are ready so that I do not have to worry about posting them manually. I use planning and scheduling tools that allow me to do that.

Metricool for social media

ConverKit (now known as Kit) for newsletters

Notion for personal planning

I upload all the content, add dates, and schedule everything out.

Knowing my content is locked in for the week gives me peace of mind (and frees up the rest of my week for more profound work or client projects).

But What About Quality?

Just because I use AI doesn’t mean I copy-and-paste whatever it throws at me. I always ensure the final content is how I want it to be.

AI helps you move faster, not think less.

I never post something without reviewing and personalizing it. I still inject my voice, tell my stories, and use my own experiences. AI just moves the friction.

AI is like having an assistant who:

Gives you ideas

Polishes your grammar

Suggests better phrasing

Helps brainstorm like a pro

The creativity still comes from me. AI just gives me speed and accuracy.

Lastly

AI isn’t here to replace your creativity; it’s here to amplify it.

Using AI can be a game-changer if you’re trying to show up consistently online but feel like there’s never enough time.

Thanks to AI, I can spend one focused day creating content for the week and free up the rest of my time to grow my business, write more stories, work on client projects, or just enjoy life.

So, that’s pretty much how I create more content with less stress while still staying true to my voice.

Feel free to use the workflow and tools I use to automate your creative process using AI, too.

When I first started writing online, I had no audience, connections, or idea of how to make money from it. I didn’t think about any specific niches or the purpose of writing.

But I knew one thing—I loved writing and wanted to find a way to make it sustainable. I wasn’t even thinking about monetization then; it came to my attention only after I had written over fifty articles.

My first goal was to earn my first $1,000 purely from writing.

I didn’t know how to do it, but I was sure it would happen. I tried monetizing my blog with Google ads, but it was one of the worst ways.

It took time, trial and error, and a lot of persistence, but I eventually hit that milestone. And the best part? I did it without needing a massive audience. Here’s precisely how I made my first $1,000 writing online — and how you can do it too.

1. Writing on Medium.com

I used to publish only on my blog when I started writing online. But it did not help me grow my audience or make money. Then, I discovered Medium, and it was a game-changer for me.

Medium was the first place I started consistently publishing my writing. At the time, I knew little about SEO, audience building, or marketing, but Medium allowed me to focus on one thing: writing.

The Medium Partner Program pays writers based on member engagement with their stories. I wrote about creativity, self-improvement, online writing, and personal experiences—topics that resonated with people. My first few articles barely made a few dollars, but as I wrote more, a few gained traction. One article brought in over $170 alone, and collectively, I made a few hundred dollars from Medium in my early months.

Writing consistently and experimenting with different topics helped me gain traction. I learned that you don’t need a huge audience to make money; you just need to write content that connects with readers.

2. Selling e-books

I quickly realized that relying on Medium’s algorithm wasn’t enough. I wanted more control over my income, so I wrote and published my first e-book.

Instead of charging a specific price for my e-book, I used Payhip to keep it “Pay what you want.” This means that people could either get it for $0 or pay any price they wanted. I learned this strategy from other writers on Medium, and surprisingly, some readers downloaded my book for $1, $2, and more, even when they could get it for free.

The first time someone bought my e-book, I was shocked. Someone was willing to pay for my writing! Then, I wrote another e-book, priced at $4.99, and promoted it in my articles and social media.

Within a few months, my e-book sales added a few hundred dollars to my total income. It wasn’t a bestseller, but it proved that even with a small audience, you can make money by packaging your knowledge into something valuable.

I learned that You don’t need a 200-page book to start selling. A well-structured guide that solves a problem is enough to start earning.

3. Freelancing and Ghostwriting

While I loved writing on Medium and selling e-books, I wanted a more stable income, so I turned to freelancing and ghostwriting.

At first, I had no idea how to get clients. I started posting my articles on LinkedIn, and fortunately, I received positive feedback from my connections. Businesses and individuals began contacting me, offering me paid writing jobs. I made $30-$50 per article at the time, which was a lot for me.

As I built my portfolio, I landed better-paying clients. Some paid $100 per article, others even more. Ghostwriting was incredibly lucrative because many businesses and creators needed content but had no time to write it themselves.

I did this for a year and stopped because I had to focus on building my agency and wanted more control of my time. Freewriting and ghostwriting paid well, but I didn’t want to do it long-term.

4. Tips and Donations from Readers

One of the most surprising ways I made money was through reader support. I set up a Ko-fi page and occasionally mentioned it at the end of my articles. I didn’t expect much, but to my surprise, readers who found my content valuable started tipping me. Most left $3, others $10. One generous reader even gave me $36 because he was fascinated with my writing.

This wasn’t my main income stream, but it reinforced something important: if your writing helps people, they’ll want to support you. Even a small, engaged audience can be enough to start earning.

I learned that you must first provide value. If people love your work, they’ll happily support you financially.

Final Thoughts

When I added everything up—Medium earnings, e-book sales, freelancing, and reader tips—I had officially earned my first $1,000 from writing. More importantly, I had proven that making money as a writer was possible, even without a massive audience.

If you’re just starting, here’s my advice: don’t wait until you have thousands of followers to monetize your writing. Start small, experiment with different income streams, and keep showing up. Your first $1,000 is just the beginning.

When I tell people I’ve written over 500 articles while spending just an hour a day on writing, they usually respond with some combination of disbelief and curiosity.

The truth is, I’m not a superhuman with infinite motivation or some secret energy reserve. I just found a process that worked for me — and stuck to it.

I struggled a lot with writing consistently during the early days. When I saw writers publish an article almost daily, it made me wonder how it is even possible. However, once I figured out a proper system, I couldn’t believe how easy it was to write.

If you’re struggling to build a consistent writing habit or think you don’t have enough time, this article is for you. I’ll walk you through the simple 3-step process that made writing part of my daily routine. And yes, you can steal it.

Step 1: Ideas and Outlines

I used to sit down, stare at a blank screen, and wait for inspiration to strike. Spoiler alert: it rarely did. Writing felt like pulling teeth, and I’d waste more time thinking about what to write than actually writing.

I struggled to find writing ideas. But I didn’t let it stop me from writing; I wrote about whatever I wanted. I also got into the habit of listing ideas whenever I felt inspired. That helped me create an idea bank — a collection of ideas to write about.

Everything changed when I started outlining my articles before I wrote them.

Whenever an idea pops into my head — whether I’m commuting, walking, or just daydreaming — I jot down a quick outline on my phone. It doesn’t have to be detailed. I want to cover the main points, maybe a catchy headline if I’m feeling inspired.

For example, when I decided to write this article, my outline looked something like this:

Intro: Writing 500 articles in 60 minutes a day

Step 1: Talk about ideas and outlines before writing (mention staring at blank screens)

Step 2: Write without editing (share the kitchen timer trick)

Step 3: Edit later with fresh eyes (talk about letting drafts sit)

Conclusion: Consistency is key

That’s it. Having a roadmap before I start writing makes the process smoother and faster. When it’s time to write, I’m not starting from zero — I’m simply filling in the blanks.

Step 2: Write Without Editing

This was a game-changer for me.

I used to write a few sentences, immediately delete half of them, rewrite, and repeat the cycle until frustration overturned. It was exhausting and incredibly slow. The problem? I was trying to write and edit at the same time.

Then, I read about the “kitchen timer” method. Here’s how it works: you set a timer for a specific time —usually between 30 to 60 minutes (in my case) — and write non-stop until the timer goes off. No backspacing, no second-guessing, no fixing typos. Just pure, unfiltered writing.

At first, it felt awkward. My inner critic screamed at me to fix that awkward phrase or delete that typo. But I ignored it and kept going. And something magical happened: I started writing faster, and my ideas flowed more freely.

By the time the timer buzzed, I’d usually have a full first draft. It wasn’t perfect (far from it), but it was done. And done is better than perfect.

I recommend anyone struggling to write consistently or find ideas to try freewriting. It gives you a taste of writing without editing and coming up with brilliant ideas.

Step 3: Edit Later With Fresh Eyes

Writing and editing are two different mindsets. Writing is about creativity and flow; editing is about precision and clarity. Trying to do both simultaneously is like driving with one foot on the gas and the other on the brake.

That’s why I always let my drafts sit before editing.

After my 60-minute writing session, I’d close the document and forget about it until later in the day (or the next day). When I came back to it, I had fresh eyes. I could easily spot awkward sentences, repetitive ideas, or unclear points.

Editing became a separate, focused task, usually taking less time than I expected. Sometimes, I’d even surprise myself: “Hey, this isn’t half bad!”

Some days, I write a draft for 30 minutes and use the remaining 30 minutes to edit the draft I wrote the previous day. This helps maintain the flow of my writing and editing processes.

The Power of Consistency

This 3-step process isn’t groundbreaking, but it works because it’s simple and sustainable. I wasn’t trying to write the perfect article in one go. I wasn’t aiming for hours of writing marathons. I just showed up for 60 minutes a day, followed my process, and let the results stack up over time.

Some days, the words flowed effortlessly. On other days, it felt like wading through mud. But I kept going. And that’s the real secret: consistency.

If you write for 60 minutes a day, that’s 365 hours a year. Even if you write just one article a week, that’s 52 articles in a year. Keep that up for a few years, and you’ll be amazed at how much you’ve accomplished.

So, whether you’re just starting out or looking to improve your writing routine, give this 3-step process a try. It helped me write over 500 articles and might just help you, too.

Advice is everywhere. There’s no shortage of blog posts, podcasts, and TikToks promising “the ultimate guide” to success. They all tell you what you should do:

Start waking up at 5 a.m.

Post every day on social media

Be consistent

But here’s the thing — that’s not what most of us actually need. We don’t want to be told what to do. We want to know how you did it.

It’s one thing to say,

“Build your network to grow your business.”

But it’s way more helpful when someone shares,

“I sent 50 cold emails a day for three months, and here’s the template that got the best response.”

That’s actionable. That’s relatable. And most importantly, it’s real.

The Power of Specificity

Years ago, when I was trying to grow my blog, I read countless articles about “building an audience.” They all had the same generic advice:

Write consistently.

Engage with your readers.

Sure, that made sense — but it didn’t help me figure out what to actually do.

Then, I stumbled upon a creator who broke down exactly how they grew from zero to 10,000 readers. They shared screenshots of their analytics, detailed the guest posts they wrote, and even listed the mistakes they made along the way.

Suddenly, it clicked. I didn’t just have vague instructions; I had a roadmap.

Sharing Your Story Helps Others

When you tell your story — the wins, the failures, the weird little hacks that worked for you — you’re giving people something to grab onto. They can see themselves in your journey.

A friend of mine wanted to break into freelance writing. Instead of just telling her, “Pitch your ideas to editors,” I walked her through how I landed my first paid gig. I showed her my initial pitch emails, the follow-ups, and how I handled rejections. That’s what gave her the confidence to hit send on her own pitches.

How You Can Do It Too

If you’re sharing advice — whether in an article, a conversation, or a social media post — ask yourself: Am I just telling people what to do, or am I showing them how I did it?

Be specific. Be honest. Include the messy parts.

Instead of saying, “Start a podcast,” share how you recorded your first episode in a closet with a $20 microphone. Instead of “Grow your email list,” explain how you wrote a lead magnet that actually converted — as I did in this story.

Because when people hear how you did it, they’re not just getting advice — they’re getting proof that it’s possible.

Don’t Forget the Emotional Side

Sharing your experience isn’t just about tactics — it’s about the mindset, too. Talk about how you stayed motivated when things weren’t working. Did you have moments of doubt? How did you push through?

People connect with emotions as much as they do with strategies. If you were scared to put yourself out there but did it anyway, that’s a story worth telling.

The Ripple Effect

When you share how you did something, you empower others to take action. You’re not just giving them advice — you’re giving them permission to try, fail, and succeed on their own terms.

So the next time you give advice to someone, resist the urge to just hand them a list of tips. Instead, say, “Here’s how I did it.”

Because that’s the kind of story that makes a difference.

—

Let’s be honest: life doesn’t hit pause just because you have a creative itch to scratch. Between work deadlines, family obligations, and that endless pile of laundry, finding time to write creatively can feel like trying to spot a unicorn on your morning commute.

But here’s the good news: it’s possible — even when your to-do list looks like a small novel.

1. Embrace micro-moments

Who says you need hours of uninterrupted silence to write something meaningful? Some of my best ideas have come while waiting in the car for my grocery pickup or lunch break. Keep a notes app handy, or carry a small notebook. Jot down snippets — a clever phrase, a character idea, or even just a mood you want to capture. These micro-moments add up.

I once had a breakthrough for a short story while sitting in a doctor’s waiting room. I quickly typed the idea into my phone, and that spark eventually became a complete narrative. Creative moments don’t always wait for perfect conditions.

2. Lower your expectations (in a good way)

This isn’t about settling for mediocre writing; it’s about permitting yourself to create without the pressure of perfection. Not every writing session needs to produce gold. Sometimes, just getting words on the page is a victory. One evening, after a chaotic day, I wrote three sentences that didn’t even connect — but they sparked an idea I developed later.

There was a time when I obsessed over getting every sentence right the first time. Spoiler: it never worked. Letting go of that pressure allowed my creativity to flow more freely.

3. Use constraints to your advantage

Ever tried writing a story in 100 words? Constraints can be surprisingly freeing. If you only have 15 minutes, challenge yourself to write a single vivid scene or brainstorm five potential plot twists. Knowing you have limited time forces your brain to focus and get creative fast.

During one particularly hectic week, I challenged myself to write a flash story in just 10 minutes. The result was rough but surprisingly compelling. Constraints can push you to think outside the box.

4. Turn mundane tasks into idea incubators

Washing dishes, folding laundry, or walking the dog might not seem like fertile creative ground, but they’re perfect for letting your mind wander. I once solved a major plot problem while scrubbing a particularly stubborn pan. Let your thoughts drift and see where they take you.

Another time, I figured out a character’s motivation while folding a mountain of socks. There’s something about repetitive tasks that frees up mental space for creativity.

5. Set (ridiculously small) goals

When life is hectic, aiming to write 1,000 words a day might set you up for disappointment. Instead, set a small goal that feels almost laughable — like writing for five minutes or drafting a single sentence. The key is momentum. Once you start, you might find yourself writing longer than planned.

I once challenged myself to write just one sentence daily during a busy month. Some days, that was all I managed; on other days, that single sentence turned into paragraphs. Small goals keep the creative flame alive.

6. Find accountability in unexpected places

Tell a friend, partner, or even your social media followers about your writing goals. Knowing someone is expecting an update can be a powerful motivator. I once texted a friend, “I’ll send you my first draft by Friday,” even though I had no idea when I’d write it. Spoiler: I found the time.

Another time, I joined an online writing group where we shared weekly progress updates. The gentle accountability kept me writing even when life was chaotic.

7. Be kind to yourself

Writing won’t happen some days, and that’s okay—creative energy ebbs and flows. The important thing is to keep showing up, even if it just means thinking about your story while making dinner.

There was a week when I didn’t write a single word but spent much time mentally mapping out a story. When I finally sat down to write, the words came quickly because I’d already done the mental groundwork.

Final Thoughts

Remember, creativity doesn’t need perfect conditions to thrive. It just needs a willing heart and a bit of resourcefulness. So, write that messy paragraph between meetings or brainstorm character names while folding socks. Your creative spark will thank you for it.
